HONESDALE, PA — The Greater Honesdale Partnership is excited to announce that it has been awarded $1,330,000 through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Alternatives Set-Aside (TASA) Program. This funding will be utilized for a transformative project aimed at enhancing a portion of Honesdale’s Main Street corridor, focusing on infrastructure improvements and amenities that promote accessibility and pedestrian safety.

The TASA Program provides funding for a wide range of transportation alternatives, including pedestrian and bicycle facilities, infrastructure projects, community improvement activities, environmental mitigation and safe routes to school projects.

The funds awarded to the Greater Honesdale Partnership will be dedicated to the following enhancements along the Main Street corridor:

Stamped Concrete Walkways: New, durable stamped concrete walkways will be installed to provide a visually appealing and pedestrian-friendly environment.

Curbing: Upgrades to curbing will enhance safety and delineate pedestrian areas from vehicular traffic, ensuring a safer experience for all.

Lighting: Improved lighting infrastructure will be implemented to enhance visibility and promote safety, especially during evening hours.

Utility Updates: Necessary utility updates will be carried out to ensure efficient and reliable services for businesses and residents along the corridor.

Bench Amenities: Comfortable and accessible bench amenities will be installed, providing resting spots for pedestrians and enhancing the overall streetscape.

Importantly, all walkways and amenities provided as part of this project will meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Standards, promoting inclusivity and access for all citizens across the new streetscape section. The project will feature 8’ wide sidewalk pathways, well-marked crosswalks, and strategically placed lighting to serve pedestrians traversing the adjacent State Route (Main St., SR 006).

“This award represents a significant milestone for our community and underscores our commitment to creating a vibrant, accessible, and safe environment for residents and visitors,” said Executive Director Sandi Levens of the Greater Honesdale Partnership. “The Main Street corridor enhancement project will not only improve infrastructure but also enhance the overall experience of our downtown area.”

The Greater Honesdale Partnership extends its gratitude to the TASA Program for its support and looks forward to collaborating with the Honesdale Borough, local stakeholders, businesses, and residents to ensure the successful implementation of this transformative project.
