Youngsville water rates increased

YOUNGSVILLE – Following a public hearing on Monday night, the Callicoon Town Board voted to increase the rates in the Youngsville Water District.

It has been approximately a decade since Youngsville Water District users last saw a rate increase.

Currently, customers pay $50 for up to 6,250 gallons per quarter, and $8 per 1,000 gallons over that amount.

The new rates of $65 for up to 6,500 gallons and $10 per thousand gallons over that amount, will go into effect as of the April 30, 2022 billing cycle (second quarter).

Since the water bills are paid quarterly, the increase for the minimum amount of water used is $60 per year.

In addition to the rates, the late penalty has also increased going from 10 percent to 25 percent, while the fee for new installations is increasing from $150 to $500.

Previously, the penalty if found guilty of tampering with meters within the Youngsville Water District, was $25. Now the penalty is $250 and, if it is found that the tampered meter needs to replaced, the person(s) responsible will also have to pay the $500 new installation fee.

Callicoon Supervisor Tom Bose explained that the water district hasn’t seen much growth in the number of users to increase revenues, while costs of operation and maintenance have continued to rise.

Bose said the Town contemplated the rate increases two years ago, prior to the pandemic. They decided, at the time, with what was going on with the economy, to postpone the topic.

“We can’t postpone [this] any longer,” said Bose.

He had previously told the Democrat that while nobody, especially elected officials, ever want to raise the cost of anything, circumstances necessitated the proposed increases.

Reorganization

Monday night’s gathering also served as the Town of Callicoon’s Reorganizational Meeting.

Several appointments were made, and it was decided the town board would continue to meet on the second Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m.

The Town also designated the Sullivan County Democrat and the River Reporter as their official newspapers.
