SUNY Sullivan updates policies, job titles

LOCH SHELDRAKE – The SUNY Sullivan Board of Trustees updated multiple job titles, various policies, and approved a revised curriculum for a Construction Technology AOS Degree at their regular meeting at the college on November 17.

Chair of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Nancy Hackett, introduced the recently hired Vice President for Administrative Services, Timothy Lever, to the Board.

The Board of Trustees voted in favor of passing a resolution intended to update official titles associated with jobs that were created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the Board passed resolutions that updated multiple policies and academic curriculum regarding the Construction Technology AOS Degree program.

The policies involved in revision included that of administration and retention, college-sponsored travel, key control, and inventory. The update also included the removal of two out-of-date policies.

Following the approval of the resolutions, Dean of Students and Director of Athletics Christopher DePew reported to the Board of Trustees on various campus-based food and toy drives that are expected to benefit SUNY students and families this holiday season, as well as the year-round, on-campus food pantry which is partially stocked by the Hudson Valley Food Bank and New Hope Community’s Hope Farm.

DePew also spoke on the thriving athletic scene on campus, reporting that 146 students are involved in at least one traditional or virtual sport this semester. According to DePew, the SUNY Sullivan Generals athletics comprise over 10 percent of the entire student body, and at least 80 percent of students living in the residence halls.

In her report, Dr. Hackett, noted that in comparison to last year, enrollment for the college is ahead.

Dr. Hackett also expressed her gratitude and positive impression regarding the recent work and dedication of Christina Buckler, Director of Recruitment and Admissions at the college, a sentiment which was shared by other Board members as well.

In addition to looking to the future with the updates in policy and curriculum, Dr. Hackett highlighted the college’s recent plans to expand their childcare center services with the recently awarded $1 million from New York State.

“We are very grateful to Governor Hochul and SUNY for recognizing that it is often the non-academic barriers that prevent students from succeeding in college,” said SUNY Sullivan President Jay Quaintance in a recent statement.

“These funds will allow us to fill a much-needed gap in Sullivan County and ensure that more parents are able to attend college, obtain degrees, and expand their employment opportunities. Being able to provide access to infants and toddlers is a great step forward and also has the potential to allow us to expand educational opportunities for our students in our early childhood education programs.”

Dr. Hackett touched up on the anticipation of the college’s Theatre and Arts Program’s upcoming production of In The Heights, which will run December 2 and 3, and the weekend of Dec. 7 through the Dec. 10.

“It is so fun to watch the activity and energy that is back, and the excitement of being back on campus and being involved,” Dr. Hackett said. “We are very excited from the campus perspective.”

Dr. Hackett continued, “The excitement goes to the faculty, the staff, the admissions folks, the County ... everyone out there is working very hard to get all of our students back in their secondary education.”
