Over $384K tax bill due for Care Center

LIBERTY –– The Sunset Lake Local Development Corporation (LDC) recently received a $384,649.25 property tax bill from the Town of Liberty, due January 31, 2022, for the Care Center at Sunset Lake.

Of that amount, $152,259.02 are 2021 omitted County and Town taxes that were added on to the current bill.

Back in September, the LDC paid a $226,000 school tax bill on the property. Part of the school tax bill will be reimbursed by Infinite Care for the period in which they've served as consultants at the Care Center.

At that time, Town of Liberty Assessor Vanessa Kelder told the Democrat that when the County transferred ownership of the Care Center to the LDC, it no longer fell under the tax exemption it previously had. Therefore, the exemption came off. Kelder also said the LDC had not applied for a new exemption on March 1, 2021.

When the Democrat reached out to Kelder on Tuesday, she said the property was still not tax exempt because she still hasn’t received any exemptions.

According to Sunset Lake LDC Chair Lowell Feldman, the LDC has engaged special counsel to insure any taxes that are payable are paid and to file the necessary paperwork to insure appropriate exemptions are established.

Feldman added that property taxes are part of the state reimbursement process so Infinite Care will assist the County as the licensed operator in obtaining available reimbursement.
