Bressler named Sullivan West Super

JEFFERSONVILLE –– The word interim is being removed from Dr. Kathleen Bressler’s title, as the Sullivan West Central School District Board of Education (SWBOE) recently announced her appointment as the district’s next superintendent of schools.

She was named interim superintendent in January, when Stephen Walker took the superintendent’s job at the Croton-Harmon Union Free School District. Prior to that, Bressler had been the district’s assistant superintendent for instructional services for three and a half years.

“Dr. Bressler has proven herself over the past months as a leader committed to moving the Sullivan West School District forward,” said the SWBOE in a letter announcing Bressler’s appointment. “Her focus on communication and relationship building were appreciated by our community. She most recently led the district through a successful school budget process and vote, coupled with the cooperation of long-time Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services, Lorraine Poston.”

SWBOE President Rose Joyce-Turner said public schools exist to educate all children and meet them where they are, so ultimately, when they graduate and enter their adult lives, they’re ready to become productive citizens in “our democracy and workforce.”

“We are confident and thrilled that Dr. Bressler will continue her leadership and vision here with our Bulldog community to meet this goal for each of our Bulldog students,” said Joyce-Turner.

Educational Service Council (Dr. Thomas Ramming and Dr. Teresa Lawrence). The superintendent's search process included a community- wide survey and the input from community and stakeholder groups in the beginning phases of the search.

“I am so humbled to have the opportunity to serve Sullivan West as their superintendent. I have enjoyed serving the District for the last 3.5 years as Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services and then being selected to serve as Interim Superintendent for the past 6 months,” said Bressler.

“I am vested in the Sullivan West community in this role and as a parent in the district, and I look forward to continued work with students, teachers, administrators, the Board of Education, and our community stakeholders to keep Sullivan West schools moving forward as we strive to ensure all Bulldogs are provided with a high-quality educational experience.” Bressler told the Democrat that over the next several months the district will begin to engage in the Strategic Planning Process which will provide the opportunity for all members of the Sullivan West community to have input into the district’s path forward.

“For now, my focus will be on three primary areas; enhancing our overall communication efforts; reviewing our fiscal plan to ensure a secure future and prepare for long-term capital projects; and continue the process of ‘cleaning up’ in the aftermath of COVID,” said Bressler. “This work will entail a deep dive into our processes to see what is working and what isn't, reviewing instructional practices and programs, and providing mental health services and supports to adjust to our new reality.”
